At the TURN BEAUTY INSIDE OUT Girls Leadership Retreat,
sixty participants learned to identify the (unrealistic) labels
that are often created in the media about how girls "should" be,
"should" look, and "should" act. Through language awareness, connecting
with each other, and creating their own project (no art experience
necessary), each girl was guided to look within herself (rather
than to look outside) to replace harmful media labels with a uniquely
positive, affirming message about herself. Girls were provided with
art materials, and a journal book to create their message and be
a voice of change.
